Happy new year and welcome back to the second part of our hotel hacks series to make your experience just that little bit better! In the last part released last year, we’ve covered some of the more unorthodox hacks. In this part, let’s cover a few more of the classic hotel hacks that most hotel regulars use frequently! First, before you even make your booking official, you can always try to
Negotiate A Better Rate
Staying in a hotel for an extended duration for whatever reason? Or maybe you’re a loyal guest who regularly returns to that one hotel whenever you visit that destination, especially if it’s quite frequently? Call up the hotels directly, and try to negotiate a better booking rate! Hotels usually offer slightly discounted per-night prices for extended stays(usually a week or longer), but only if you ask. The reason they’re so accommodating is because you’re saving them the trouble of finding guests to fill those rooms for seven or more consecutive nights.
Likewise, since the details of every booking is logged, a hotel definitely knows if you’re a regular that stays with them every so often. Hotels value your loyalty, and so will likely try everything within their power to keep you as a loyal guest who only ever thinks of them when visiting. If this hotel is in a tourist hotspot, this tip will work to your advantage as they know there are many alternatives for you to choose from!
Use Hot Steam From The Shower To Iron Your Clothes
We all have those days when you just return from an overrun evening meeting that forced you to have a quick and light dinner, and you enter your room grumpy, frustrated, and just wanting to lie down and sleep, something as menial as ironing your clothes can be a huge hurdle to overcome. Or maybe, your hotel just doesn’t provide you with an iron for that fancy dinner in that Michelin Starred restaurant that you had planned for your vacation.
Well, ditch the ironing board(if your room has one) that you were probably using as a table, as recommended in the previous part, and just hang up the garment that needs ironing in the shower. Afterwards, take a hot steamy bath to clear your mind off of any stresses or unhappiness that you may have encountered through the day. When you’re done, you’ll find out that the clothes you hung up to iron have miraculously lost their wrinkles. Of course, it won’t be as crease-free and straight as if you used an actual iron, but this does work as a quick fix if you don’t have an iron in your room, or if you just don’t feel like doing chores that day. But you should definitely note that this hack only works if you’re having a hot shower, and cold showers can’t produce the steam needed to iron your clothes!
Pack In A Power Splitter
Think back to that annoying experience of when you booked a hotel that had the perfect view, delightful room layouts, a sparkling clean toilet and even a bathtub, only for you to check in and realize that your entire family had to share two power outlets. Save yourself from that annoyance in the future, and pack a multiplug or power splitter, and you’ll never have to take turns charging your devices anymore! Before you do that, however, you should check for restrictions, especially if you’re taking a flight, and doubly so if it’s an international flight.
Use Any Card To Keep The Power On
Environmentalists look away now! Nowadays, with the ever-rising environmental concerns, hotels are more and more committed to saving energy wherever they can. One such measure is by implementing a system where you have to insert your room card in a slot near the door for power to be supplied to your room. It can be quite annoying and cumbersome, especially if you’re staying in a swelteringly hot country and just want to go for a quick one hour swim without returning to your room being a steamy sauna. Here’s the secret though: you don’t have to use your room card! The cardholder actually works by using a button at the bottom of the slot that acts as a switch, supplying the power to your room when it’s pressed. At the same time, most hotel access cards are the same size as credit cards, so you can actually use any cards you want to! Of course, don’t leave something valuable such as your debit card or identification card in the slot. Instead, maybe that membership card that you used for the book shop near you that expired over a decade ago can finally come in handy! Any redundant cards that you kept for no reason can be used to keep the power running in your room for those quick half hour convenience shop runs to satisfy your midnight munchies. Just don’t use this hack if you’re leaving for the whole day, please! Save the environment where you can, every little step helps!
Use A Clip Or Hanger To Keep The Curtains Closed
Have you ever had those nights where you had a drink too much, or your itinerary overran, and you just want to sleep in, but the dumb curtains left just enough of a gap for the sun to bless you in your face at 7am? Here’s a classic hotel hack to let you have a good slumber on those late nights in! Use a clip to hold your curtains closed, even better if you have hangers with built-in clips as you can now clip shut your curtains in two spots. This tip may be redundant if the curtains in your room have overlapping rails, but it could come in handy if they don’t!
Open All Drawers And Cupboards Before Checking Out
Seriously, just take 5 minutes and open all the doors and drawers in your room, and no, we don’t mean the main door that lets you leave. Yes, it will be very troublesome, and your tiny hotel room will become even smaller, but it allows you to check all storage spots before you leave. If you stayed in the hotel for more than a few nights, you may have left something small but important, like a notepad containing all the notes from your business meeting, or your charger that you left in the socket, or even your “World’s #1 Dad” mug that your precious gave to you for father’s day!
Doubly as important, open the safe, especially if you have a habit of using them! While some people may stray away from safes as they can be easily overridden by the hotel staff, it’s safe to say most of us use the safe to keep our stuff, well, safe. There have been incidents where guests reach the airport, only to remember that their passport or wallet is still in the hotel safe. Best case scenario, you miss out on duty free, worst case scenario, you miss your flight home. So eliminate that risk, and check, check, and, check again!
After that, we wish you a safe trip home. Thank you for reading this short series, and we wish you happy travels with TripCandy!
